Day 14 - Cheesewick

Chiswick is known for having monthly Sunday morning markets that range from local goods, flowers, and this week - cheese!

19/11/2023

This morning Chelsea & I woke up with a plan to not work. As great as it is to have a set morning routine, I think there are also times when you need to have a break for a day. Today was that day. So instead of waking up and rolling out of bed at 5am to get some hours in, we slept through our alarm (how good!).

However, instead of being woken up by a loud alarm, I was woken by an excited Chelsea smiling from ear to ear, telling me today was ‘CHEESEWICK!’

For those of you who know Chelsea, you’ll know she needs no extra excuse to browse a local market or pick at a cheese board & sip on some wine… but today was the day she had a great excuse to do those things exactly!

We got ready and caught the bus into town, where we managed to peruse every single stall along the main street of Chiswick, trying any & every cheese, jam, chutney, crackers, or even beer samples that the stall owners had on offer. After getting through the entire market, we then turned back, returning to stalls that we had decided had the perfect cheese, crackers, olives, bread, etc., and picking up enough for a picnic in the park (actually too much, but that’s better than not enough).

Below is a photo of what we picked up, but I’ll give you a rundown;

  • Raspberry, Kiwi & Lime Jam

  • Rum Butter (described as sugar and alcohol) - tastes and has the texture of cake mix

  • Pepperoni Sticks

  • Truffle Brie Cheese (soft)

  • Cheese Crackers (made with cheese)

  • Fresh Quince Paste

  • Garlic Olives

  • Fried Cheese Balls

  • Giant Mushroom Arancini Ball

  • Italian Herbs & Cheese Bread

After our little picnic in the park, we decided to walk down to The Strand on the Green, which is where our friends from the pub last week had told us to visit. It is a pathway alongside the Thames River on the Chiswick side, and features a few pubs and houses that all have shorter doors that have been built to incorporate a step into the house to avoid the high tide mark when the floods happen.

We strolled the riverbank, but we had chosen a bad time to come down, as the water was at low tide (which reminded me a bit of Ross Creek at low tide… not what you want).

We took that as a sign to pop into the local pub for a beer to get out of the cold for a while. The Bulls Head pub is a cute little pub with low ceilings and an old-time atmosphere. As Mum says, we put our wine jackets on (if you drink enough, you can’t feel the cold), and walked home. You can really feel the season changing now, and I think we may be in for a bit of a cold snap, but the end of this Autumn period has been great to experience. The streets are covered with brown and yellow leaves, with the trees becoming more like skeletons by the day.

We returned home by about 5pm and spent the night in with Grandad, having some of his pancake and dal.
